GFRA Meets with MMDAs to Review Progress in Child Labour and Trafficking prevention and Response

GFRA organized a stakeholder engagement for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) on Child Labour and Trafficking (CLaT) prevention and child protection across Ghana’s four coastal regions on 17 September 2026 in GFRA’s Conference room, to review progress in CLaT prevention and response, facilitate cross-district learning, strengthen coordination and referral mechanisms, and agree on practical actions to address identified gaps.

The engagement brought together representatives of government institutions, development partners, MMDAs, and community structures, including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Fisheries Commission, Social Welfare, Curious Minds, Volta Revival Foundation, and Community Child Protection Committees (CCPCs) to share practical experiences, good practices, and lessons learned from their work with vulnerable children and fishing communities.

A key achievement was the identification of emerging forms and drivers of child labour and trafficking; vulnerable groups and locations and gaps requiring joint attention. Stakeholders also discussed emerging CLaT concerns and identified practical actions to strengthen prevention and response at community and district levels.

The engagement demonstrated that when government institutions, development partners, and community structures work together, communities are better positioned to identify risks, respond to child protection concerns, and strengthen systems that protect children from labour and trafficking.

Key agreed actions include the implementation of cross-cutting advocacy/sensitization on CLaT irrespective of funding; and constant orientation or reorientation for new CCPC members and social welfare on the level of work done.

The agreed actions and strengthened relationships provide a foundation for continued collective action towards safer and more protective communities for children.
